What is an Audit?

Auditing is defined as the process of verifying, inspecting or examining a process, a system or a data set.  An organization can be audited as a whole; however typically a specific function, process or system is audited individually.

There are two classifications of audits; internal or external.  Internal audits are performed by employees of your company (i.e. first-party audits).  External audits, in contrast, are performed by an outside organization (i.e. second-party or third-party audits).

Audits verify compliance to a particular standard or specification (ASME, ISO, ASNT, SOX, AS9100, etc.).
